Our Mission statement:
To encourage students creative expression by celebrating their talents and sharing their artistic achievements with the community
Art Beat is a creative expression of the CPY Visual and Performing Arts Academy.
CPY is a prevention program providing positive alternatives to gangs, drugs and violence while reinforcing individual strengths.
The Visual & Performing Arts Academy is a vital part of Community Partnership for Youth (CPY). Research has shown the discipline and creativity of art helps children to be successful academically. Through the arts the children are learning many critical thinking and life skills, which they will take with them into the world. The Art Beat Youth Arts Festival is an outgrowth under the direction of CPY Art Director Sue Ann Hillyer. This festival is designed to showcase the art and creativity of students in Schools, After School Programs and Arts Organizations on the Monterey Peninsula.
March is National Youth Arts Month and is celebrated through out the U.S. This year the festival will take place in March 2014. The first annual event will focus on middle school and high school students from the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District and Art created through the Wellness Program of the Monterey County Health Department. We will showcase both Visual and Performing Arts. March 22nd 2014 will be the Performing Arts Celebration at Del Monte Center, which will include dance, music, both signing and group instrumentals, spoken word poetry and drama. We will have “Creation Stations” for the community, designed for exploring their creative expression and an exhibit of some of the Visual Art and Film. The main Visual Art component will be a juried exhibit by invitation exhibiting art, both 2d and 3d, from local school’s art programs and classes. This exhibit will be presented at the Monterey Peninsula Airport Gallery at the end of April.
The goals of Art Beat are to become an annual event showcasing the art and creativity of students in our community, to develop a year round Outreach Program to bring art workshops, classes and community art projects to local schools and to become a member of the National Art Education Association. The Festival will include all disciplines. Performing Art, dance, drama, music and spoken word poetry. Visual Arts: two dimensional and three dimensional art, photography and film.
